Life Lessons

A Fable – Rozlyn Heart

I met Rozlyn Heart at the Beach Bar on Clark Lake.  She was our server.  It was about this time twenty years ago.  She introduced herself as Lindsay, and I remember thinking, “This is a girl David would like.”  She had a look I knew he’d fall for.  She was more than cute and just short of gorgeous.  There’s nothing wrong with cute, but she was way more than that. Being just shy of gorgeous made her approachable.  Approachable is good, very good.  I’d call her pretty beautiful.  That’s just about perfect. In any case, David and Lindsay met, dated, fell in love, married, and have two children, Brady and Eva.  She’s just as pretty as the day we met, but she’s matured as a woman.

A couple of years ago the performance bug bit her.  She sang with her brother-in-law, Sutton James, and David’s sister, Elizabeth, at several Michigan venues.  Sutton referred to his two sidekicks as the Tebo twins, and the three of them were Tres Leches.  Lindsay loved singing with the group.  She flew west to practice with them prior to the Michigan tour, took singing lessons on her own, and developed her craft.  Now, in a year when many are still hiding under the covers from the coronavirus, she and her two musical companions, Johnny and Tyler, AKA “Gold Coast”, have formed a dynamic trio.

If you check out their website, you’ll fine the following bio.

Rozlyn Heart is a singer originally from Jackson, Michigan, who enjoys performing various musical genres in her own style.  In 2018 & 2019, she spent two summers touring throughout the state with the award winning singer/songwriter, Sutton James, based in San Diego, California.  She has performed at a few of Michigan’s favorite venues, including Shorts Brewery, Lake Ann Brewing, Blackrocks Brewing, Stormcloud Brewing, Boatwerks Restaurant, Dark Horse Brewery, and The Beach Bar in Clarklake, Michigan.

Johnny and Tyler are the instrumental parts of Gold Coast.  Johnny Hawk is a U.S. Navy Veteran, serving for eight years, and a long-time lover of music.  He has performed in various capacities over the past 18 years.  Tyler Allard received his first guitar for Christmas at the age of 16, and he’s been playing ever since.  In addition to guitar, Tyler also plays bass and drums.  Like Johnny, he is a former military officer, serving for seven years in the U.S. Air Force.  In addition to the many hats Tyler wears for Gold Coast, he also has a side hustle as a rap artist.

Specializing in Classic Rock, 70’s, 80’s, and 90’s music, a unique mix of alt-country classics, ballads, and general “feel good” music, they like to focus on bringing the audience feelings of nostalgia.

As Rozlyn, Lindsay holds nothing back.  She sings from deep within her soul.  I call her a “belter”.  She lets it all loose, yet tones it down when the song calls for a softer side.  You can see, and feel, her perfecting her craft as you listen.

She continues to be a supportive wife to the community’s school superintendent, oversees the activities of two teenagers, and serves as the director for a major food supply company with multi-million dollars in sales.  She’s into yoga, keeping fit, and making music.

What’s all this have to do with a fable’s attempt  to impart a useful truth?  In the case of my mom, the wannabe dancer, she didn’t chase her dream.  If you asked her she’d probably say that being a wife and mother, raising a family, and holding down a job, were all she cared to handle.  She’d say that, but I’d wager that working more on her dancing skills would have suited her just fine.

As for Lindsay, she’s chasing her dream.  She’s steping outside her comfort zone, and living a new life that’s just hers.  She’s fortunate her husband and children support her efforts and are proud to be associated with Rozlyn Heart.  Their support makes the chase easier, but the onus falls with Lindsay, as she’s the one who’s taking the chance to be something more.

As for the “useful truth” of this modern day fable, it’s simply this.  If you have a passion, put yourself out there and take a chance.  We’ve each got one run around the globe, so live life to the fullest.  Waiting on the sidelines, wishing for something, doesn’t make it happen.  Enter the arena and give it a shot. The best time to get started is NOW.
