Family Photos

About a month ago I destroyed my wallet by going swimming with it still in my pocket.  I tried to dry it out over the course of a couple of days  but finally decided to invest in a new one.  I dried out the contents, and everything was salvageable.

When I was a child, my dad’s wallet had about a dozen of those see-through plastic inserts that held family photos.  He packed several of his favorites, mostly our school pictures, for safe keeping and sharing.  He carried his cash in the “bill fold” section. The remainder of his treasures included a teamster’s union card, his chauffeur’s license, a Faygo ID card, and a Blue Cross Blue Shield insurance card.  They were all made from high end paper.  There were absolutely no plastic cards.

My drenched wallet was filled with plastic, a single paper business card from a company in Addison, and this picture of Eva and Brady.  The photo was taken about ten years ago, so that’s about how old my wallet was.  I saved the picture, but I won’t be carrying it any longer as my new wallet has no see-through plastic inserts for pictures.  Not one wallet in the store had such an option.

My new carry does have the technology that blocks others from stealing the data from my credit cards.  I carry three such cards, and a debit card, so the technology is a nice perk, but I’d be willing to give it up for a couple of see-through sleeves.  I haven’t carried cash in my wallet in years.  I have a money clip, and that’s were my cash goes.

My smart phone is where I’ll have to carry family photos from now on.  I’ve taken some and some have been forwarded to me by others.  I have an app called “Gallery” where they’re all stored.  The problem is you have to open the app and search for the pictures you’d like to see.  With see-through plastic sleeves I got to see these two youngsters whenever I opened my wallet.  It was a great way to get my daily pick me up.  Who wouldn’t enjoy seeing these smiling faces?

Until I find another wallet with picture storing capabilities, I’ll use my smartphone.  Interestingly, I’ve started to collect pictures of my newest grandson, Jackson James, #Jack #JJ #JT.  Mike and Kate have sent me several.  In all my years of having a cell phone, I’ve always used the standard “blue” or “grey” as my screen saver.  Nothing fancy for me.  When Kate sent this picture, I knew immediately I was going to have to break tradition and use it has my screen saver.

Kate took this shot after buckling him into his car seat. I think she told him they were on their way to see his pediatrician to check out his circumcision.  While he’s only a week old, I think he’s going to be a lefty.

  1. Maybe he’s saying that he wasn’t ready to leave that wonderful, warm womb.
