And the Password Is…

If your life is like mine, you have too many passwords. I’ve got them for bank accounts, brokerage accounts, credit cards, medical records, internet and tv service, social media accounts, Sirus radio, Hulu, Netflix, Amazon Prime, the Secretary of State, my Social Security and State retirement accounts, my USGA Ghin account, and a ton of on-line vendors. Each one also requires a user name, and each one offers up the warming… Do not use the same password you use for other accounts, and change your passwords on a regular basis. AT LEAST ONCE A QUARTER.

I’ve changed my information so many times I had to purchase a Thesaurus to expand my vocabulary.

Back in the day I received all my bills in the mail, wrote a check for each one, and mailed it. Now I pay everything electronically. Some are autopay and are charged to a credit card. (I earn travel miles that way) A couple are deducted directly from my bank account. The new way is faster but I’m not sure it’s better.

There’s an app that will put all your passwords in one place so you never have to worry about losing, or changing, them. I’m not ready for this “new age” thinking. I have a three ring password binder with dividers for sections like Utilities, Financial Transactions, Social Media, Retailers, Sports and Leisure, Medical, and Assorted Fun and Games. I’ve had to add to the medical section as I’ve aged, which required me to reduce the Fun and Games section.. I keep it close to my computer for easy access. My binder is several inches thick but it works for me.

Then there’s the password requirement that you do or don’t use capital letters, numbers and special characters. There’s always a minimum and maximum number required. Some people find this to be a challenge. Others are just plain creative
