Practice

If you’re a basketball fan you may recall Allen Iverson’s rant about practice that took place almost twenty years ago.  If you don’t’, click on this link.

Allen didn’t like being questioned about practice and his press conference comments became legendary.

I spent part of each day leading up to last Wednesday’s shoulder surgery wearing my sling. I’m glad I did. I practiced several things and dispelled several preconceived notions I had about wearing the device.

  1. Putting on a shirt is no big deal.  I thought it was going to be difficult.  I just put my bad arm in the sleeve, follow that with my head through the neck hole, and finally, my good arm.  I can only pull down with my good arm, so I do a hula hoop move to get it around my waist.
  2. Putting on my underwear and my elastic waist shorts is very similar.  I put in my left leg, follow that with my right, and hula hoop them up while pulling with my good arm.  I’ll probably go commando around the house and get fully dressed when I head out.
  3. I received two wonderful showering suggestions that are working out very well.  a) Use a hand towel rather than a bath towel to dry.  They’re much easier to handle one handed.  That must be why we call them hand towels. b) Use a hair dryer for difficult to reach places like your arm pits and back.  Just aim it over your shoulder for the top of your back and up near your rear to dry the lower portion.  CAUTION:  It can get hot so don’t burn yourself.
  4. I’m still working on my toilet issues.  I’m having a bidet installed.  I may have used it by the time you read this.  I went with my best option and had an electrical outlet installed near the toilet so I can have warm water.  I don’t really need a heated seat, but cold water may send the boys north causing an entirely new dilemma.  I’m not willing to risk it.
  5. Typing is an issue.  The keys sit back too far from the front of my laptop, and I can’t reach them even if I stand at the kitchen counter.  I’ll figure something out.  I’ve been hunting and pecking one-handed.  Auto correct is helping out quite a bit.

Allen and I have different views regarding the importance of practice.  I think it helps you become more skillful.   And from personal experience, I can tell you that one handed underwear pulling can be a challenge.  You can’t practice it too much.

  1. Enjoyed these comments very much! So pleased you are making positive comments!
I’m sure you’re going to work everything out and enjoy a strong shoulder when finished.

  2. I had several surgeries to my hands over the past ten years. I had developed a condition called “trigger finger.” The surgery to correct this is pretty simple, but my hand was wrapped and my couldn’t use it for ten days. I never realized how many things I did with my left hand. Hope your healing goes quickly and well.
